The spirit of Christmas was nearly tangible at Pomeroy elementary Thursday, Dec. 18 as nearly 650 students waited to receive a new bicycle given to them, not out of charity, but because they earned them by achieving academic and behavioral goals.
At the beginning of Pasadena ISD’s fall semester, Pomeroy Principal Stephen Harding contacted the organization Elves and More to enroll in their incentive program.
This program encourages students, kindergarten to third grade, to imp...rove reading skills, behavior, and attendance. Each child signs a contract with their teacher. If they meet the goals of the contract, they have earned a bike.
“Seeing the excitement on all of the kids’ faces was priceless,” Mr. Harding said. “Knowing that they had worked for the bikes was rewarding for them as well as all of their teachers.”
Volunteers from around the community, including the Sam Rayburn High School football team, joined in to distribute the bicycles and helmets to each of the deserving students.
Pomeroy Elementary is the first Pasadena ISD school to be chosen as a participant in the Elves & More Bikes incentive program.
